starsReal Life Soap Opera

Starr went to the clinic on Friday to have an abortion.  She's 16 and the situation is pretty bad.  She went by herself and despite putting on a brave face, she was terrified.  She can't have an abortion in Pennsylvania (where she lives) without her parents knowing so she rode a bike to the bus station and took the bus to a clinic in New Jersey.  Her parents don't even know she's had sex and they certainly don't know she's pregnant.  They've already forbidden her from seeing her boyfriend and her father even threatened to kill him.  As it turns out, she didn't go through with the abortion after all.  Moments before the procedure was to begin, her boyfriend showed up at the clinic...

Pretty dramatic stuff, huh?

Well it should be--it's a soap opera.  But "One Life to Live" is dealing with some very real-life issues in the story of 16-year-old Starr Manning's pregnancy.  And one thing that's been made quite clear to Starr, and by extension to her fans, is that once there's an unplanned pregnancy, none of the options are easy.

Starr, played by 16-year-old actress Kristen Alderson, is a longtime member of the "One Life to Live" family.  Her family is one of the mainstays of the show.  Viewers have watched her grow up, like a member of their own (albeit saner) families.  They've seen her through kidnappings, her parents' volatile relationship, school plays, prom, and now, a teen pregnancy.

No one knows how this story will play out.  Will she carry the pregnancy to term?  Will there be a teen marriage to go along with the teen pregnancy?    How long can she keep the secret from her parents?  What will they say if they find out?  Will there be a return visit to the clinic?

Hopefully this story will give viewers a starting point for their own conversations.  Moms who watch can talk about it with their own teens and teens who watch can discuss it with their friends.  Talking about these issues makes it easier to confront them in real life.  Thinking about what you would do in a similar situation allows you to make a plan and avoid the mistakes others have made.  Teen pregnancy happens everywhere, to about one-third of American girls in fact.  Almost everyone knows someone who's been through it.  And now, millions of OLTL fans know someone too.
