BB.jpgThe NBC series The Baby Borrowers premiered last night.  We are anxious to hear the reaction of those of you who saw the show.  Some have been highly critical of the show for separating the babies from their parents.  Others have praised the show show and have told us that they think it will be educational. You've seen our take in previous blog postings.

Et tu you?  What's your take?

Your campaign is to look out for the well-being of children. I am concerned that this is not the goal of the Baby Borrowers. Zero to Three, a research and best practice based project has provided a boycott notice. This has to do with the issues around ethics (see APA Ethical Codes), attachment research (visit research by Bowlby, Ainsworth)and brain research. Your support of baby borrowers goes against the work that is being done to protect the youngest people (see Zero to Three www.zerotothree.org and the Program for Infant and Toddler Care www.pitc.org websites).

Touted as a "social experiment," NBC's newest reality series, "The Baby Borrowers," purports to discourage teen pregnancy by enlightening young people on the realities of parenthood. If one is so naive as to believe that the executives at NBC are interested in anything more than ratings, then it is time for a reality check. The real irony here is that the comments posted on the NBC website and other blogs reveal that the teenagers watching the show are not being dissuaded by what they see. They are, in fact, rooting for their favorite couples. One writes, "i love you alicea and cory yall make a really good parents!!!!:)" How agencies designed to educate teenagers on the pitfalls of unplanned pregnancy could have been so short-sighted is beyond belief.

This Show is a great idea ! I think it we be the best birth control out there for teens and "young adults" I have to say though : The Girl that wouldnt even wear the (fake belly) acted like She was 14!<<wahhhhh You cry Baby! The other "Girl" who was mad at the Babies "Mother " because the Mother didnt think She was taking good care of the Baby (She wasnt! btw) then the Girl refused to be nice to the BABY!!?? I hope these young immature Girls don't procreate until theyre at least 40! or never ! twits.

I do believe you are correct. This isn't going to make these kids not want to have children early. Having heard one of the girls say that this has made her want children more! We can't assume that just because they are teens, they won't make good parents. Some teens will. And with the help of family and friends, it is alot easier. The problem is that most of these teens haven't matured and learned to put their needs aside and do what is best for their partners and their "children". When my daughter was born I wanted to spend every waking minute making our lives better. Doing whatever I had to do to make sure she had the things she needed and wanted, even if I had to do without basic necessities. These kids just don't have that. Not to mention, if this "experiment" does work. We are only saving 10 teens and their children-to-be. How are we going to save the rest of the United States. But I guess that is the problem that this campaign is faced with. I say we might need to come up with another method than this TV show. But thanks for trying.
