starsThe Latino Community Takes on Teen Pregnancy

capitol-hill_sm.jpg

As our bloggers have noted in the past, unfortunately progress in reducing teen pregnancy rates has not been even among all racial and ethnic groups. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, as of 2004 Latina teens had the highest pregnancy and birth rates of any major racial or ethnic group.

Tomorrow, May 19th, at 10:00am at the Capitol Visitor Center, the National Campaign's Latino Initiative will partner with the Latino Leaders Network to raise awareness among policymakers, service providers, the media, and concerned citizens about these disparities and how they affect the Latino community. This Issue Hour will highlight a new poll commissioned by The National Campaign and the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) that examines differences and similarities among key subgroups within the Latino community with regard to attitudes about teen pregnancy, sex, relationships, and goals and aspirations.

In other Latino Initiative news, Telemundo, the nation's second largest Spanish-language TV network, is running a teen pregnancy segment from May 26th to May 29th on prime time national news at 6pm and 11pm daily.

The Senior Manager of the National Campaign's Latino Initiative, Ruthie Flores, was on Telemundo's local show LĂnea Directa last year addressing teen pregnancy in the Latino community (click here to see the article that resulted from the interview), and will be the show's national expert on teen pregnancy in the Latino community in the special series, "Madres Prematuras," next week. The five different news segments will feature a total of 11 teens and two moms and will discuss the causes and consequences of teen pregnancy in the Latino community, solutions to reduce the high rates of Latina teen pregnancy, and the National Day quiz. (The quiz, where teens find out how much they really know about sex and healthy relationships, is available in both English and Spanish at www.stayteen.org. You can also click here to download the Spanish-language quiz directly).

If you haven't RSVPed to the briefing, it's not too late! If you can't attend, check the Latino Initiative's webpage for more information about the subgroup poll. And (if you understand Spanish) don't forget to tune in to Telemundo next week to check out "Madres Prematuras!"
