I recently met with my monthly book club here in DC. It's a diverse group of women from all different professions--from NIH nerds to journalists, lawyers, and architects--highly educated, late 20s/early 30s women who always impress me both personally and professionally. They are the type of DC women who have "leaned in" and are taking over the world. That's why I was so surprised when the conversation turned to birth control and it wasn't in such a positive light. Many of them were no longer taking the pill we all grew up with. Okay, so you must be on one of the low-maintenance methods like the IUD or even the patch, right? Please say yes? No? Oh no.
Trying not to freak out and immediately start passing out Bedsider materials, I dug in a little more as to why. After processing the conversation, which focused on concerns about hormones and wanting to know the natural cycle of their body etc, I've found that this isn't so different from what I've been seeing lately. I think of it as the all-natural, organic, yoga-practicing, kale-eating, chia seed-filled, gluten-free girl. And I understand it to an extent. You want to be healthy and you worry about everything you put in your bodies--except I guess these mimosas we're sipping don't count. But it's concerning to know how many myths women believe about birth control--and it may be why 2 million unmarried women 18-29 years old have an unplanned pregnancy each year.
While it's great to be mindful of what you put in your body, it's important to do your homework and make a choice that will not only be healthy but will also protect you from an unplanned pregnancy. Next book club I'll be prepared with some chia seed, gluten-free muffins (yuck), with a side of Bedsider materials.
